Skogvåv
Forest Weaver
In the heart of a misty forest, where the trees whisper ancient secrets and the moss cushions the earth, lies Skogvåv, a sanctuary for the weaving of stories, fibers, and life itself. Its name, drawn from the Scandinavian words for "forest" (skog) and "weave" (våv), embodies the interconnectedness of nature and humanity—the eternal web of life spun by the hands of time.
For generations, the forests of Scandinavia have been both muse and provider, offering resources and inspiration to those who craft. Danish ancestors, like mine, wove their lives tightly with the rhythms of the natural world. Long before industrial looms, the women of Denmark gathered around handlooms in hearth-lit rooms, weaving threads of wool, flax, and stories. Each strand held the imprint of their hands, the pulse of their hearts, and the essence of their land. The Danish word for loom, **væv**, itself reflects this artistry, a word that resonates with the soulful act of weaving.
Skogvåv carries this legacy into the present, honoring the ancient practices while breathing new life into them through the art of felting. Felting, too, is an act of weaving, though not with a loom, but with nature itself—water, pressure, and wool coming together in a tactile alchemy. The forests inspire not just the creations but also the process. Like the tangled roots of old oaks, felting interlaces fibres, creating something both delicate and enduring. Felting feels like coming home for me, my hands have an ancient knowledge and they move across the fibres as though I have been working wool for decades. There are stories being remembered with each encounter.
In the Scandinavian worldview, weaving extends beyond textiles. The Norns, three powerful figures from Norse mythology, weave the threads of fate at the roots of Yggdrasil, the great tree connecting all realms. Each life is a strand in their tapestry, every decision a knot, every relationship a crossing. This ancient belief resonates in the name Skogvåv, reminding us that in every piece of felted wool lies the essence of life itself—soft yet strong, humble yet profound, resilient and enduring.
My Danish ancestors, with their rich weaving traditions, likely felt this connection deeply. In their cottages by the sea or their farms nestled in the lush countryside, they understood the significance of creating something useful yet beautiful. Every woven or felted piece held stories—of family, of survival, of dreams carried forward. Today, Skogvåv continues that tradition, offering a space where the past meets the present, and where the wildness of the forest is felt in every fibre.
As the felting needles dance and the wool softens under my hands, I remember that I am not just crafting objects. I am weaving a continuation of the story—a story of wildness, of wisdom, of connection. In Skogvåv, the forest itself becomes my loom, and the web of life my inspiration.
