where my story takes shape

My name is Jamie Mathiasen and I have spent more than twenty years sitting in circles with women, listening to the stories they carry.

As a mindfulness teacher, ceremonial guide, and facilitator of women's work, I have spent more than twenty years walking what my teacher, Shiloh Sophia, calls The Way of the Red Thread. It is the understanding that each of us is connected through an invisible thread of belonging. Connection to our ancestors, our descendants, our communities, and the greater tapestry of life itself. This Sacred Red Thread carries the stories, wisdom, creativity, grief, and resilience of the women who came before us, while inviting us to find our own piece of the thread as our sacred responsibility, to hold in this tapestry. It reminds us that we are not separate, but part of an unfolding lineage of women creating, remembering, and becoming together.

My journey into fibre art began with a doll making course with the incredible Julia Inglis of Sacred Familiar. This lead to wet felting and growing fascination for vessels that coincided with reading Maira Kalman's Women Holding Things.

What do women hold?

We hold tiny hands and communities. We hold memories, stories, losses, and becoming. We carry the gifts of our ancestors and the dreams of those who will come after us. The vessel became a symbol for all of it.

Working with wool feels much like the work I have done with women for decades. Layer by layer, fibre gathers beneath my hands. Through water, pressure, patience, and time, something emerges that did not exist before. A form takes shape. A story reveals itself. This is what happens when women gather and witness the stories held by one another.

Each vessel and vase I create is an exploration of transformation, belonging, and the sacred relationship between women and the stories that they carry. Inspired by ancestral wisdom, seasonal cycles, myth, and the landscapes that surround me, my work invites reflection on what we carry, what we release, and what we are becoming.

I am not simply interested in creating beautiful objects. I am interested in creating pieces that feel alive with meaning and that reflect all that women hold. Each piece reminds us of our connection to the earth, to our lineage, and to the deep wisdom that lives within us and most importantly, to one another.

Through fibre, I continue the work I have always loved: helping stories take shape and giving form to what has long been waiting to emerge.

The Returning Light: Felting A Lighted Vessel

In the Northern traditions the Winter Solstice is associated with Deer Mother. A being that carries the light of the new year in her antlers. On the longest night, when the world seems suspended in the in-between, the Deer Mother travels into the dark to retrieve the sun. She does not rush it. She carries it home carefully, as if she knows that light must be held before it can be shared. We gather here in that same spirit: to shape a vessel, to remember what can endure the winter, and to make a home for the returning light.

Some stories are meant to be held in a vessel of their own.

Whether you are seeking a meaningful piece for yourself or a one-of-a-kind gift for someone you love, I would be honoured to create something together. Through storytelling, shared inspiration, and conversation, we will explore the memories, themes, places, people, or symbols that are meaningful to you. From there, I will translate those threads into a unique felted piece that reflects your story and intention.

I offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation to connect, explore your ideas, and discover what wants to emerge.

Together, we will create a piece that is not only beautiful, but deeply personal. A tangible reminder of a story, a season, or a sacred thread in your life.
